Mailchimp SMTP Setup

Mailchimp offers a full-featured SMTP interface to send bulk email or individual email.

Requirements for Mailchimp SMTP Setup

You need the following things to configure Mailchimp SMTP.

  • A Mailchimp account with the Transactional add-on enabled
  • Your Domain account to configure DKIM and SPF.
  • Outbound SMTP ports open (25, 587, 2525, or 465).

SMTP Server Settings

  • SMTP Host: smtp.mandrillapp.com
  • Ports:
    • 25 (unencrypted)
    • 587 or 2525 (STARTTLS)
    • 465 (SSL)
  • Encryption:
    • STARTTLS on 587/2525
    • SSL on 465
  • Authentication: Required (any active API key is enough; username not necessary, but recommended to use your contact email)
  • Username: Your Mailchimp contact email
  • Password: A valid Transactional API key

Generating Your SMTP Credentials

  1. Log in to your Mailchimp account and navigate to the Transactional option.
  2. Search for SMTP & API Info.
  3. Copy any active API key; this is your SMTP Password.
  4. (Optional) Enter your primary contact email for the SMTP username.

Verifying Domains & DNS Configuration

To get a proper delivery rate, it's highly recommended to configure SPF and DKIM in your TXT record of the DNS server. To configure SPF and DKIM in your TXT record, follow the steps:

  1. Go to the Sending Domains option from your Transactional Dashboard and click on the Verify Domain option.
  2. Add the TXT record to your DNS for SPF and DKIM.
  3. Now just wait for Mailchimp to detect the Record and you will get a complete notice.
